Ternary lithium battery is a type of lithium-ion battery. Its cathode material is nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) or nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA), which is also the origin of its name (three metal elements).
The performance of ternary lithium battery mainly depends on its cathode material, and the battery’s performance can be changed by changing the ratio of the three elements. For example, the higher the proportion of nickel in the battery, the greater the energy density of the battery. Therefore, many electric vehicle companies often use high-nickel ternary lithium batteries to improve the endurance of electric vehicles.
The nominal voltage of a single ternary lithium battery is 3.7V. By combining ternary lithium batteries in parallel and series, a variety of different capacities and voltages can be obtained, such as 7.4V, 12V, etc.
The structure of ternary lithium battery is similar to other lithium-ion batteries, the main difference is in the positive electrode material. It is mainly composed of positive electrode (nickel cobalt manganese, or nickel cobalt aluminum), negative electrode (usually graphite), electrolyte, porous polyolefin separator, and current collector.
The back-and-forth movement of lithium ions and electrons between the positive and negative electrodes constitutes the charging and discharging process of the ternary lithium battery.
Charging process:
When the ternary lithium battery is connected to an external power supply, the current will come from the external circuit to the positive electrode of the battery. At this time, the lithium ions will move from the positive electrode to the negative electrode of the battery through the electrolyte. At the same time, the electrons move from the positive electrode to the negative electrode of the battery. This process is expressed by the chemical reaction formula: LiCoO₂→ CoO₂+ Li⁺+ e⁻
Discharging process:
When the ternary lithium battery is powered, the lithium ions will move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode of the battery through the electrolyte, and the electrons will move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode of the battery. This process is expressed by the chemical reaction formula: CoO₂+ Li⁺+ e⁻→ LiCoO₂
